Animal Husbandry Internship

Job Description

Fall 2026 paid internships are available at Caldwell Zoo in Tyler, Texas in the areas of Animal Husbandry. (Available departments: Mammals 1, Mammals 2, Birds, and Reptiles)

The Caldwell Zoo is seeking highly motivated, hard-working, professional minded students who want to take advantage of educational opportunities to gain on-the-job experience in the zoological career field.

Internship learning opportunities and duties include:

  • Safe methods of exotic animal handling and restraint
  • Animal behavior, husbandry, and record keeping
  • Animal nutrition, to include preparing and distributing animal diets
  • Preventative medicine and disease treatment
  • Water quality testing and water changes
  • Cleaning animal enclosures
  • Visitor relations
  • Emergency procedures and protocols
  • Must be able to lift up to 40 lbs and be able to work in all inclement weather conditions
  • Watch animal medical procedures
  • Attend a Veterinary Department meeting
  • Assist keepers with daily projects
  • Shadow up to five other departments

Requirements

  • Must be 18 years of age or older
  • Must be a sophomore in college or have a higher classification
  • Overall GPA must be 2.5 or higher
  • Must pass a background check and have a negative TB Test

Duration

September 9th – December 22nd

* Please plan to arrive at least three business days before the start date to complete the onboarding process.

* Any time off requested during the internship (excluding illness or emergency) must be discussed in the interview and approved before starting the internship.

    Education Levels

    Annual Earnings

    Earnings figures are based on OES data from the BLS and include base rate, cost of living allowances, guaranteed pay, hazardous-duty pay, incentive pay (including commissions and bonuses), on-call pay, and tips.

    Technical Skills

    A list of hard skills associated with a given career ordered by the number of unique job postings which ask for those skills.

      Core Competencies

      The skills for the career. The "importance" is how relevant the ability is to the occupation: scale of 1-5. The "level" is the proficiency required by the occupation: scale of 0-100. Results are sorted by importance first, then level.
