Position Summary:
The Summer Day Camp Leader supports Jefferson Land Trust’s summer youth education programming by helping facilitate engaging, hands-on outdoor learning experiences for youth ages 4-12 in East Jefferson County. Working alongside the Education Coordinator, a team of two interns will play an active role in delivering place-based education activities that connect young people to the natural landscapes, ecological systems, and conservation work happening in their community.
Summer youth programs emphasize curiosity, exploration, and stewardship through activities such as nature observation, ecological investigations, outdoor games, creative projects, and collaborative problem-solving. The intern will help guide small groups of participants, assist with activity facilitation, and contribute to creating a safe, inclusive, and supportive learning environment where youth feel comfortable asking questions, trying new things, and building connections with the outdoors.

Reports to: Education Coordinator
Job Status: 40hrs/wk
Compensation: $21.00/hr
Schedule: June 29 – Sept 4, 2026 (some flexibility on start and end dates)
Monday – Friday, 8:30 am – 5:30 pm including breaks
Location: This position is based at Sunfield School 111 Sunfield Ln, Port Hadlock-Irondale, WA 98339
Training: All necessary training, including first aid/CPR, is provided on the job. The successful intern will gain experience in youth leadership, group management, education theory, and local ecological knowledge.
Essential Functions
- Assist with daily facilitation of summer youth programs including outdoor activities, games, and hands on learning activities.
- Support education coordinator in supervising participants during activities such as nature exploration, ecological investigations, and other outdoor activities.
- Help prepare and organize program materials, equipment, and activity supplies.
- Assist with program setup and breakdown at outdoor sites.
- Support youth engagement by encouraging curiosity, teamwork, and positive participation.
- Help maintain a safe and inclusive learning environment for all participants.
- Assist with basic documentation and program tracking (attendance, photos, activity notes).
- Participate in staff planning and debriefing meetings.
Qualifications and Physical Requirements:
- Open to applicants ages 16 and up
- Ability and willingness to perform the responsibilities and tasks identified in this position description, given appropriate training and support
- Willingness to learn new skills including first aid and CPR training (provided by Jefferson Land Trust)
- Ability to work as part of a team of staff members and/or community volunteers in the field
- Ability to work in a timely manner while demonstrating a strong work ethic, safety, and common sense
- Ability to uphold high ethical standards
- Engage in regular and clear communication with co-workers and supervisor
- Demonstrate strong attention to detail
- Physically able to work on uneven terrain including on and off trails in forested areas
- Proficiency in the English language
- Must pass criminal background check
