Our Mission

Implement a pause on the training of human-level AI systems, until we know how to build them safely and keep them under democratic control.

About PauseAI US

PauseAI US is a nationwide grassroots movement advocating for a pause on the rapid development and deployment of human-level artificial intelligence due to its risks to society. We organize events, engage in advocacy efforts, and raise public awareness about AI safety concerns. We have local groups in 15 US cities and counting. Learn more about our movement at https://www.pauseai-us.org.

Position Overview

PauseAI US is seeking student interns to help lead our organizing efforts across the country, grow our on-campus presence, and scale up our grassroots movement. This is a part-time volunteer role requiring 5-15 hours per week, with the length of commitment flexible based on intern availability.

Interns will be responsible for planning direct actions, recruiting and mobilizing volunteers, and regularly coordinating with the national PauseAI US office.

Key Responsibilities

  • Establish and lead a student group on your campus, with regular on-campus events and opportunities for student engagement.
  • Attend training workshops and receive comprehensive one-on-one guidance throughout the internship, covering volunteer recruitment, events planning, grassroots lobbying, and more.
  • Recruit and coordinate volunteers for events and campaigns.
  • Engage with elected officials, through grassroots lobbying campaigns and district meetings.
  • Gather petition signatures and engage the public in PauseAI US’ advocacy efforts.
  • Build relationships with local activist groups and media outlets.
  • Communicate regularly with the national PauseAI US office and align with broader campaign strategies.

Why Intern With Us?

Interns with PauseAI US will have the opportunity to:

  • Develop skills that will help you in your career, including group management, events planning, effective communication, and more.
  • Join our community of interns and volunteers across the country, through participation in workshops, networking, and social events.
  • Make a real difference in one of the world’s most important cause areas, with the opportunity to influence AI policy on a state, national, and even global level.

Qualifications

  • Strong organizing skills and passion for grassroots activism
  • Ability to plan and execute direct actions, including public events.
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to engage with diverse communities.
  • Self-motivated, with the ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Passion for AI safety and alignment with PauseAI’s mission.

Time Commitment

  • 5-15 hours per week, with flexibility.
  • The length of the internship is flexible, subject to interns’ academic schedule and other commitments.

Location and Compensation

  • The internship location is flexible and can be run anywhere in the country, since the purpose of the internship is to scale up our student groups throughout the United States.
  • This is an unpaid, volunteer internship. However, stipends will be available to reimburse travel, materials, and other expenses.
  • You may be able to receive course credit for this internship, depending on your school’s requirements. Please consult with your college advisor or other officials to determine this.
