SMBC hosts a 10-week Summer Intern Program for undergraduate students who will have the opportunity to work on teams, be exposed to significant firm-wide projects within their respective business areas and support a range of deals with our clients.

Participants in our Summer Intern Program will work on a variety of projects including building financial models, developing client presentations, conducting research, and participating in client meetings – all to improve their understanding of the global banking industry.

We are currently hiring into the following areas:

Sourcing & Procurement

The Sourcing & Procurement function was established in order to assist management in the steering and optimization of the America’s Division strategic sourcing, procurement operations, and third-party risk. The team is involved in coordinating expense and risk management efforts with vendors to maximize negotiation authority and minimize risk to efficiently deploy the firm’s resources. The organization includes a number of departments including Procurement Operations, Strategic Sourcing, Strategy & Governance, Supplier Relationship Management, and Third-Party Management Operations.

Corporate Real Estate & Facilities

SMBC America’s Division Real Estate & Facilities team manages a real estate footprint of over 900k square feet spread across 36 locations and an annual spend of~$47MM throughout the region. Corporate Real Estate’s objective is to enable SMBC AD businesses through integrated real estate strategies and robust facilities support while minimizing cost, providing financial transparency, and mitigating risk while continuously improving our processes. Key initiatives include the expansion of our Americas Headquarters office at 277 Park Avenue in New York City and a variety of leasing, project management, security and facilities-related initiatives across the portfolio.

Americas Division Location Strategy

The Americas Division Location Strategy team is responsible for developing and implementing a comprehensive regional location strategy in support of our growing business in the region. This includes assessing our current location footprint as well as other locational opportunities. As part of the strategy, the team works to proactively identify and pursue efficiency opportunities while minimizing risk to the business.

  • Strategic Sourcing and procurement, including vendor selection, negotiation, and contract management
  • Budgeting, cost analysis, and evaluating return on investment (ROI)
  • Third-party and vendor risk management
  • Process improvement and business process outsourcing
  • Facilities operations, including vendor coordination, maintenance oversight, and sustainability initiatives
  • Market research and location strategy development
  • Effective communication and collaboration
  • Attention to detail and a strong analytical mindset

How Our Program Works

Our Summer Intern Program is designed for students who completed their junior year.

This 10-week program commences in June and includes:

  • Orientation
  • Training with on-the-desk experience
  • Senior Speaker Series
  • Japanese cultural activities
  • Social networking activities
  • Volunteer Day with a local nonprofit
  • Mentorship opportunity with both a junior and senior mentor at SMBC

The successful candidate will possess or demonstrate the following personal and professional attributes:

  • Currently pursuing an undergraduate degree from an accredited university with a graduation date of December 2027 or May 2028; excellent academic record
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills with specific ability to communicate concepts and ideas concisely and defend their validity
  • Ability to comfortably interact with clients in a professional and mature manner
  • Outstanding ethics, integrity, and judgment
  • Intellectual curiosity

SMBC’s employees participate in a hybrid workforce model that provides employees with an opportunity to work from home, as well as, from an SMBC office. SMBC requires that employees live within a reasonable commuting distance of their office location. Prospective candidates will learn more about their specific hybrid work schedule during their interview process. Hybrid work may not be permitted for certain roles, including, for example, certain FINRA-registered roles for which in-office attendance for the entire workweek is required.

    A list of hard skills associated with a given career ordered by the number of unique job postings which ask for those skills.

      Core Competencies

      The skills for the career. The "importance" is how relevant the ability is to the occupation: scale of 1-5. The "level" is the proficiency required by the occupation: scale of 0-100. Results are sorted by importance first, then level.
