SMBC hosts a 10-week Summer Intern Program for undergraduate students who will have the opportunity to work on teams, be exposed to significant firm-wide projects within their respective business areas and support a range of deals with our clients.
Participants in our Summer Intern Program will work on a variety of projects including building financial models, developing client presentations, conducting research, and participating in client meetings – all to improve their understanding of the global banking industry.
Our Summer Intern Program is a pipeline to our full-time Analyst Program.
We are currently hiring into the following areas:
Strategy & Transformation
The Strategy & Transformation team plays a critical role in driving the remediation and change agenda in the Americas Division. The team is tasked with driving organizational change and aligning SMBC’s Americas Division with its broader goal of becoming a commercially competitive and U.S. regulatory-compliant Commercial and Investment Bank. The team was established to ensure every initiative aligns with the firm’s strategic vision, empowering each business unit to excel while staying connected to our broader business growth and remediation objectives.
Finance Change Management
Finance Change Management establishes and manages large-scale programs focused on the implementation of processes, methodologies, and systems that meet regulatory requirements and industry best practices. The team works collaboratively across all teams within the Finance organization as well as other key stakeholders (including Technology, Data, Risk, and Compliance) to provide project management support, as well as data-based analysis as needed, to ensure successful delivery of project objectives.
How Our Program Works
Our Summer Intern Program is designed for students who completed their junior year.
This 10-week program commences in June and includes:
- Orientation
- Training with on-the-desk experience
- Senior Speaker Series
- Japanese cultural activities
- Social networking activities
- Volunteer Day with a local nonprofit
- Mentorship opportunity with both a junior and senior mentor at SMBC
The successful candidate will possess or demonstrate the following personal and professional attributes:
- Currently pursuing an undergraduate degree from an accredited university with a graduation date of December 2027 or May 2028; excellent academic record
- Exceptional written and verbal communication skills with specific ability to communicate concepts and ideas concisely
- Ability to comfortably interact with clients in a professional and mature manner
- Outstanding ethics, integrity, and judgment
- Intellectual curiosity
- Comfort in and commitment to a strong teamwork environment
- Highly organized, detail oriented, self-driven, and motivated
- Advanced Word, Excel, and PowerPoint skills and the ability to quickly learn new software applications
SMBC’s employees participate in a hybrid workforce model that provides employees with an opportunity to work from home, as well as, from an SMBC office. SMBC requires that employees live within a reasonable commuting distance of their office location. Prospective candidates will learn more about their specific hybrid work schedule during their interview process.
