Through the Preservation Scholars Program, the Friends of the Texas Historical Commission seeks to build interest in historic preservation among students from underrepresented cultural and ethnic groups, engaging a wider range of communities and perspectives in the effort to discover and share Texas’ historical narrative. Launched in 2007, the program is a 10-week, paid, summer internship placement within the Texas Historical Commission (THC). Many majors considered since there are many types of jobs that fall under the umbrella of historic preservation.
This program is for you if you:
- Are a student from an underrepresented ethnic or cultural community; and
- Attend a college in Texas or are a Texas resident attending school out of state OR are a college senior or recent graduate who has been accepted into a graduate program. (Proof of application or acceptance to a graduate program will be required.); and
- Will have completed 50 or more credit hours upon starting the internship; and
- Have a grade point average of 3.0 or above on a 4.0 system or a comparable GPA; and
- Are a U.S. citizen or permanent resident; and
- Have not been a Preservation Scholar before.
Program completion includes the following:
- A 10-week internship with the Texas Historical Commission
- A project of your choosing
- A $6,000 stipend
- Possible student housing in Austin for the duration of the internship
- Working at the Austin headquarters and in the field at historic sites
- Weekly “Brown Bag Presentations” with outside preservation organizations
- Brief progress reports throughout the internship and upon conclusion
- A final presentation to our Board of Trustees
